Here are some answers to your questions.
>Can you give me some insight on the following (thanks much for your time)
>1) Level of difficulty to install w/o EE degree but machanically talented?
Installing the kit is easier than installing the CD changer. The only difficult part is locating the 25 pin connector which involves pulling the trunk lining back a few inches. Once you have the connector exposed installing the kit is as easy as plugging it in.
> 2) Any permannent damage done to the car (no including splicin or re-wiring?
The car is not modified in any way. Removing the kit completely involves disconnecting the connector in the trunk and unplugging the cord from the phone jack.
> 3) Does it work with the Bose system, using the built in mic and speaker (I think your earlier decsription replaced the mic but not the speaker)
Yes, it works with the Bose system using the built in mic AND speaker. Audi uses different kinds of mics in each car and there is no way to tell which kind you have. The kit works with any kind, but a small modification needs to be made. I now recommend sending me your mic so that I can test your complete kit prior to shipping. Removing the mic involves popping off the A-pilar cover (refer to FAQ) and removing two screws.
> 4) Does it work with digital phones?
It works with any phone with a headset jack, analog or digital. Phones without a headset jack can use the kit with an adapter. These adapters can be purchased at Best Buy (bundled with a headset, approx $75) or over the net for approx $40. Try http://www.clearvox.com. You can return it to them if it doesn't work for some reason.
Refer to http://www.clearvox.com/access.html for a list of phones and adapters.
> 5) Does it reside in the armrest? any special mounts?
The phone can go anywhere you like. I keep my phone and charger inside the armrest and the handsfree cord under the armrest in the small bin. I have left this up to you as this is not a complete "professional" install. If you want a James Bond "Look, my armrest is also a phone" gadget I recommend buying Audi's phone.
> 6 can you describe how the phone operates?
Operate the phone exactly as before. When you wish to use handsfree mode you simply connect the 2.5mm plug to the headset jack on the phone or adapter. The radio will mute showing "PHONE" on the display. The phone's audio will play through the door and your voice will be picked up by the mic in the A-pilar. You hang up by pressing END. After a few seconds the radio unmute automatically, or immediately upon removing the cable. Why did I do it this way? When the phone is connected the internal speaker is turned off. This includes the ringer. If you leave the kit connected all the time you may not hear the phone ring. Second, there is no connection for an external antenna. If you leave the phone inside the armrest your reception will be TERRIBLE. Having the phone connected to a 3-4 foot long wire enables you to put the phone on the dash near windshield or on the seat next to you while concentrating on the road and getting better reception.
I hope I've been able to answer your questions. There are many configurations of A4s and I've only got one of them. Will it work with YOUR phone in YOUR car? I don't know. That's why I don't accept a dime till you're happy with it. Doesn't work and I can't fix it? Return it, no problem!
Regards,
David
