I'm hardly an expert...I used both 1 and 2 when getting out of deep snow in a steep parking spot...worked like a charm.

The car has a nice feel in deep snow with 1 only, but you lose ABS and therefore I don't engage 1 and drive around. With 2 engaged, steering and turning are much more difficult.

I see the locks as a way to get yourself unstuck, but I too am looking for other opinions/suggested uses.

and 2 locks both the center and rear. Don't drive in the dry with them engaged, you can break the driveline.
