Does anyone know what the head is made of? I am considering doing my head gasket myself, but I don't want to even attempt it if my head is aluminum... Anyone know? Thanks.

Why does that scare you away? Just follow the instructions step by step. Make sure you use a torque wrench so you don't stress anything. You should be able to handle it if you exercise care. I haven't done it yet but others here can give you a blue print to follow. computrtutr 09-27-2002, 03:21 AM Aluminum scares me away bc I was told that it warps immediately when the head is removed from the block, and that it must immediately be re-machined- and I cannot be w/o a car for more than 2 days (sat. and sun.) Tom Serrago 09-28-2002, 07:19 AM right after the first appearance of aluminum heads. I heard that too a long time ago. Does anyone know when al. heads first came out? I don't remember. Maybe back then it was true, but now-a-days; as long as one follows the removal and replacement procedures as outlined in the Bentley or the Haynes, there should be no problems with warpage, assuming of course the head wasn't warped to begin with. An immediate re-machining is optional, but after one goes through all the work just to remove the head, it's just wise, prudent, and good sense to have a shop check it out, it may not need any machining, it's cheap insurance. |
