I have the Bentley manual on order, but it is going to take a few days to arrive. In the mean time, I am wondering if anyone has done the clutch on an 87 5KSQ. I read the Haynes on the closest match I could find, but am stll not sure if it is worth the time/money to do myself. Assuming that I have nothing except a set of sockets (I do, but I'm keeping it simple), what are my costs, and how much time would it take? Here is what I know I will need:
1. Socket set (Have it, but no deep sockets, and no box/open/line wrenches)
2. Clutch Centering Tool
3. Clutch kit
4. Engine support bar
5. Ramps
6. Floor jack w/tranny cradle
I am not sure whether I have a hydraulic or cable clutch, but I am assuming cable, bc I cannot find a fluid reservoir.
Also, I welcome recommendations on which clutch kits to use. Thank you!

I would pull the engine. It really is less work, so rather than a support bar rent an engine lift. Also your clutch is hydralic, it shares the brake fluid tank. If you're not sure get it done, it really is a big first clutch job (I could change my Opel in an afternoon, a Honda in under a day, took me a couple of days on my 5KTQ.)

Well, I know the clutch is big anyway, but if it took a couple of days for someone who can change another in an afternoon, then it is probably cheaper/faster to pay a mechanic to do it, since this car is my only way to get to work. Thank you for your advice!

With what you have told us, it is best to have it done by someone with the proper equipment and experience. You may want to shop the yellow pages and tell them you have the parts. Some shops will do it especially with Audis and you can save some big bucks.

I am awaiting estimates on what it will cost to have a pro fix the clutch. What is a good price estimate? I had one tell me 700-900, which I think is a little high only because the clutch kit is 250 for a good price. From what I have heard/read, it should not take someone with experience and a professional shop 10 hours (900 high estimate - 250 parts = 650 / 65(hourly rate)= 10 hours). I have talked to one mechanic, am waiting on answer from another, plus the dealer estimate for a reference cost.

About where it ends up in my shop (actually more, since I replace Clutch/slave, pilot bearing, TOB sleeve, and input shaft bearing) = closer to 1200P/L. An 87 car could take 10hours, I count on it. Rusted bolts, broken fittings, can ruin a good days work. 4 hours to put the trans on the ground is my absolute best time, that's hustling. I believe book time is 8, that's no lunch and seeing/fixing/observing nothing else.

This is a huge job that needs more than minimum tools. Messy too. Start your savings with something simpler (like dismantling the front end uprights for the wheel bearings)
