My dad, bless his old heart, caught the performance bug from me and wants "just a couple more horsepower" out of his old 5000S. Now, I'm not too familiar with Audis, but I just wanted to know if there are any common upgrades that are done to these cars? He wants a K&N air filter, and I told him to really see a difference he'd also need headers and a good catback. Am I on the right track? Are there even any companies that make performance upgrades for this model anymore? Thanks guys!

heres a couple of options:

K&N filter-don't expect much!

Advance the timing- frees up 10 HP. Back off the timing if you hear any pinging...

Put a NF or NG Big valve head on from an 88+ N/A Audi 5000/100/80/90 2.3 liter 5 cylinder engined car. Check the local junkyards!

Thats it! Really. You'd have to spend thousands of dollars to get any decent horsepower from the naturally aspirated I-5 engine...

If that old 5000 is a 5 speed then you could drop a 5 cylinder Turbo engine in! Then you can get real power more easily...

Don't bother thinking of turboing an old automatic tranny equipped 5000. The tranny will die...

Hmm, we'll play with the timing, as for the larger head, what kind of power gains might we see? Heh, a turbo would be nice, it is a 5 spd, I'll have to check into that, I'm sure its more cost effective than trying to get much power n/a. Any ideas if the stock exhaust is very restrictive? Making our own catback would be an interesting exercise. Thanks for the help!

are rated for 130 HP and 140 pounds of torque. Not much of a difference. However bigger inlet valves equal more air which equals more Hp/torque...

Turbo engine conversion would be cool but it is alot of work! Not for the unexperienced...

I cannot comment on the exhaust because I have no idea...

Try the filter and timing and see if it makes any difference first...

...about 3" in diameter from the grill to the airbox on my 86 5K. I don't know how much it actually does, but it's much less restrictive than the factory hose.
