i checked the archives for some help and
according to the gates belt co. timing belt replacement guide it lists the 5cyl 2.2 liter engine as a NON-INTERFERENCE engine.
i own a 87 5K with the 2.3 (NF) engine(non-turbo).
is mine interference or non-interference? just want to hear it from the pros on this list.

2.2 turbo engines are interference...

3.7 and 4.2 V8 engines are interference...

2.3 N/A engines are listed as NON interference...

HOWEVER, there have been discussions that some 2.3 engines have been known to experience valve damage if the timing belt breaks at high RPM's...

So keep that info in mind. It might be worth it to you to have the timing belt changed at it's scheduled mileage!

i guess i'll just have the timing belt replaced.

any idea how much the average cost for replacement
of the belt will run? can any import shop do the job or is it best to leave it to audi or a private
audi/german shop?
dont even mention doing it myself. lack of confidence. although i did replace the left driveshaft/cv joints. it just seems the belt change is more involved.
