Did he feel a:

<bind> <CRACK!> <looseness>?

If so, he needs a new doorhandle, or it may be the threaded plastic part of the rod going to the lock mechanism. If your buddy is mechanically inclined it's a Saturday couple hour first time fix. If not, the mechanic gets a check...

Door handles for the 5K series are about $38 bux, 200 might be slightly higher.
