View Full Version : Turn Signals Inoperative - 89 Audi 100

Looking for some guidance on repairing this. Turn signals are dead whether
operated from turn signal lever or from hazard signal switch. I noticed that
last week they would work sometimes and not at other times. Now they don't
work at all. Assuming it's not a fuse, the next place I would look is the
flasher unit itself. Turn signal switch is relatively new, so I have
eliminated that as a likely culprit.

Where is the flasher relay located? I think it's under the dash somewhere in
an aux relay panel, but I'm not sure.

Is there any way to test it other than simply replacing with a new one? I
don't want to go out and buy the wrong part, especially if it is only
available from the dealer.

Is this part available at an auto supply, or dealer only? Foreign cars parts
supply? Mail order? Web?

Thanks in advance for any advice....

Remove the dashboard. It is located right behind it.(not under it) There is no other visible relay there. It is put in a spring holder. (a little hard to put back into)

Mine went bad months ago, i took it out, opened it, resoldered all the connections and i replaced the capacitor(it was bad). It's still working like new.
You can purchase a new unit(relay) if you want. Buy the Audi one from dealer(Bosch). Flashers sold at Auto parts stores didn't work for me and i still don't know why eventhough they looked the same.
Good luck!

I got under the dash and looked around, but could not find the flasher relay. I'm just going to take it to my mechanic next week. I'm getting too old to do the necessary contortions under the dash!

Thanks for your post.

It is behind the dash. Did i say under the dashboard? If i did i'm very sorry. It is right behind the dashboard. I was replacing some light bulbs on the dash in my Audi100 and this is when i first saw the relay.
I hope you haven't taken the car to the mechanic yet and paid him for the job.

It's OK Dan, I had to take it in for a freon charge anyway. He replaced the relay and the tach light bulb while he was in the dash.

Works great now!

Thanks anyway...

. . . the problem re-surfaces.

I had exactly the same symptoms you described, and the problem was not the flasher behind the instrument cluster, but instead it was the left half of the turn signal combination switch.

It was easy to replace (no steering wheel puller required) and the part was pretty inexpensive from Rick at rick@importpartsspec.com.

If the problem re-emerges, this is likely to be the solution.

Thanks for the tip...this switch has been replaced recently. That is why I suspected the flasher initially.
