For the past month this light has been coming on and off when the brake is applied. The manuel says to "take it to dealer ASAP". Not wanting too, what would be the best process to troubleshoot this problem myself? What kind of problems could this be, and what kind of money am I looking at if I decide the problem is beyond my experience. I have heard sometimes this is a simple problem, and sometimes more serious. The light in question is a triangle with a red background and in the triangle it says "Brake". Along with light there is an annoying beep sound every time it comes on.

Check your Power Steering Fluid, and brake fluid

Sounds like you have a bad brake accumulator. That is if you obviously checked the fluid level first. I am currently having the same problem on my 86 5000s that I bought as a project car.
