The anti-lock on my '87 5KSQ kicks in during moderate stops on dry pavement. Tires (Michelin MXV4) are in great shape yet. Is there some kind of adjustment on the anti-lock? Any thoughts on this? Thanks, folks.

...there may be two causes:

1. The ABS sensors may be out of alignment - too far away from the toothed ring around the hub, or the sheetmetal bracket may be bent (had your car serviced by monkey lads lately?), or the sensor leads may be cut/damaged.

2. Or the toothed ring that provides a square wave to the ABS controller may be rusted or clogged with grit/crud/grease/animal parts. Clean with a wire brush if you can't see definitive teeth on the outer CV - be careful not to rip the CV joint boot. Usually the rust issue is relavant to those in the salt encrusted states.

If the teeth are clean, I would recommend going to www.audifans.com and searching for the word ablative (yes, that's right, ablative as in ablative caps). Long thread about proper installation of the sensors.

Let us know what you find out.

Dreaded Antilock early problem that comes into play often on our cars.. Mine worked fine until the monkey lads changed the brakes on my car.. The culprit may be the wheel speed sensors located on the wheel hub. This sensor picks up a reading from a sprocket inside the hub (connected to the drive shaft or Cv joint) If the sensor is off (too far in too far out) it will give a false reading to the abs box located in the back seat. One Fix is to buy 4 plastic caps that go onto the end of the sensor and place it in the correct distance from the spline wheel that it reads. The caps may or may not work.. Next .. if the splines on the sproket wheel (thingy) are broken you need to replace that.. and Thirdly your abs box may be bad.. A guy in Tahoe hooks it up to special spectrogram to look at the system as a whole if the first attempt at fixing it doesn't work.. (the caps) I would try the caps first if that doesn't work i suggest taking it to a dealer or GOOD Audi wrench..

Good luck

4 new CV joints are not in the budget.
