Seattle 90q20v 07-10-2001, 10:18 AM Thanks all for the feedback; thinking that I might add a 200 quattro wagon now that I have been assimilated. Any additional problem spots I should look out for on the 200 on my way to an all Avant family (namely engine)? Would consider a 5000 tq too, but am partial to the later interior..... Aldo 07-11-2001, 11:00 AM Keep in mind there is a midpoint in the 89 model year for the 200's where they changed engines. The earlier builds (mc-1) had a lower compression larger turbo single knock sensor engine, which yields more turbo lag on the low end. The later models (mc-2) had a dual knock sensor, high compression smaller turbo which is much more torquey down low as the boost builds sooner. The airbag accompanied this changeover, so that is your clue to the two different versions. Some people are partial to the bigger turbo, but I personally like the smaller unit for my purposes.... Being that you have the 100 already, you know the general pitfalls of marque. With a 200q you'll have a manual trans, and the quattro drivetrain, not too much to worry about there, it's mostly the turbo and associated management sytems you'll be checking out.... Check boost readings on the digital guage under load, max for a stock ECU should be 1.3-4 bar. Also check out the avg. mileage, a well tuned example should be knocking down at least low 20's around town.... The 91 200q's are rare birds, if you can find an Avant you'll pay top $$, but you'll be getting the best engine Audi ever stopped making.... :( As far as what to look for, paying a little extra for a well maintained car with documentation will save you lots of frustration and $$ down the road...Plan on putting $$ into it no matter what you spend....They are out there, take your time, and do lots of research. Ask us any questions, we're all glad to help another fellow audiholic find the right car....right guys? Scott Mockry does a great ECU upgrade for these cars, for more information, maintenance and tuning tips go to: www.sjmautotechnik.com All you need to know about these models is in there....The Bible.... Good luck! Allen 89 200q Avant 91 200q20v Avant Good luck in your search, and keep us posted! B4S4 07-20-2001, 04:54 PM Audi wagons are #1. I have a 91 200 20v avant, and for comfort and power, there is no equal! By the way, in the US, Audi only sold 157 of the 20v avants in '91. Keep 'em alive! All of them! 100's, 200's, 5000's...there can't be all that many left!!!!! |
