Hello. I am in the process of buying a used car and am looking at a few Audis. My main concern is that an older Audi (1988-1992) with a fair amount of miles (125000-200000) would break down frequently and/or would have many problems. I have heard that this happens to many Audis and I know for a fact that my Uncle's 1983 Audi had these problems. I am looking at a 1989 Audi 200 Turbo specifically. It is manual transmission and has 160000 miles on it. If bought, will this car have many problems, or are the horror stories I hear from pre-1985 Audi's??? PLEASE respond truthfully if you know anything about this subject. THANKS!!!

how the previous owner took care of the car. If he kept up with all of the maintenance then it might be worth it. Whatever you do, STAY AWAY from any Audi's with automatic tranny's. Those tranny's are a major weak point...
Heres a good webpage checklist for 100/200/5000's

Does the car have maintenance records? If so, that's a major plus.
Find out if any of the major things have already been replaced: steering rack, hydraulic accumulator (aka "the bomb"), clutch, fuel pump, etc.
Never seen an 89 200 Turbo 5 spd. (an 86 5kT 5 spd., yes, but not an 89).
Care to tell us more?

I just bought 91 turbo with 79,000 miles for $3,300. Put $1,400 in parts and labor into (knew going in that some fixes were needed). Now it is showroom quality....best car ever owned..I would part with wife before car.
