hapless running around. My carefully constructed agenda fell apart Saturday morning, and though it could have been possible to be done in 1.5days I ended up slugging it out for 3.

HUUUUGE HUGE HUUUUGE Thanks to Keegan!

HUUGE HUUUUGE HUGE Thanks to Robin (Stoddard)

Big Ups to deephouse for making that TB writeup, of which I referenced almost exclusively (also used the SJM paperwork).

Mega thanks to the dude (Andrew) who lent me his garage.

Mucho Gracias to my friend (Mark) who let me crash at his house for 3nights

A heart-felt F*CK YOU to Greyhound
and Screw You to Purolator as well.

anyhow I'm beat, long days and covered in grease and now I have an 8am departure tomorrow with 13guys to Fort MacMurrey...oh will the fun never end?!

I have lived in alot of crappy places in my time and Fort Mac stands out in the top two Waaaaaaay too many oil crews and the diesel 1 tonne attitude. Be prepared to defend your car's honor if the conversation turns to vehicles.

Regardless congrats on the TB job. Nothing built my confidence like doing a few TBs on differant cars.

Relocating to Ft. Mac? Or just working a job there?

What MRC software are you running? Have you ever put your car on a dyno? I'm really interested to see a GT2871 power curve to determine how much earlier the 2871 makes boost than the 3071.

=P j/k. =) I'll owe you an extra beer for that one.

"What's so funny?" I hear from across the room.

he had mentioned that he is still running MRC's RS2 software. I believe it was due in part to this that he didn't notice a power or spool increase when switching turbos. I don't believe his car has been dyno'd yet either.

Cheers,

Like Corey said I am using the MRC RS2 software. My original RS2 turbo broke it's shaft about 30k km into it's life. I decided to try the GT2871 hoping for a quicker spool up. To be truthfull I havn't noticed either a quicker spool or a higher top end. In fact I believe in my setup I have lost a bit of power compared to the previous turbo I had. To be fair the car has never been on a dyno. If I had to do it all over again I would have purchased a second RS2 turbo and now that 034 has the fueling for the 3071 I am sorely tempted to go that route. Sorry I can't answer the powercurve of the 2871 vs. the 3071. All I can say for certain is that in my setup I honestly believe the RS2 turbo is preferable to the 2871.

maximize performance out of that turbo.

Supposedly the boost is supposed to be fully developed before 2500rpm, with threshold below 2100. (This is from memory - a verbal conversation I had with Javad a year and half ago.)

The GT28 is supposed to develop RS2-ish power, but deliver it much sooner.

and I have a completely open exhaust. 3 inch from turbo to tip, no cat and only a single Magnaflow glasspack (the drone is horrific but it sounds so good under power). Regardless I am not convinced that the GT2871 is a superior turbo to the RS2 using RS2 software. YMMW

I believe that 034 is refering to stock RS2 power since they state that the GT28RS should be in the 300-325 range.

The GT2871RS spools @ 3k according to the 034 website and can provide 400+ hp. Aftermarket RS2 software is in the 370-380 range, so the GT2871RS should have an advantage in spool and power over the RS2 with aftermarket software if the 2871 setup is tuned properly.

Personally I would be happy with RS2 power levels around 375, but I don't want all the lag. I have read several people write that they don't think the RS2 is a practical turbo for daily driving in anything but open traffic on the highway due to the spool being above 3k. I do most of my driving in traffic and under 4500 RPM. If as stated the 2871 is fully spooled by 3k I could live with that since my stock K24 on MRC software is fully spooled right around 2700. An extra 100hp above my current 280 and only 300 RPM slower spool is a good trade off in my book, but I want to see some dyno graphs that actually show when the power starts to come on with the 2871.

When I was doing my research, I had a few hard limitations that I didn't want to push, and the GT2871 was the other option (RS2 being the first choice).

I got that with the RS2 there would be some additional lag, but that could be mitigated some with a 1.9bar WG spring, turned all the way out.

I also felt the trade off of 100HP for 300 RPM was a very sound trade. Especially since I like the idea of being able to tool around town completely out of boost, if that suits my fancy. Living out where I do, long legs and high-RPM boost threshold is no big deal.

I If the GT2871 is essentially an RS2-alike, without the robustness of a journal bearing, and more expensive to boot, then the question is why would anyone pick it over the RS2 unit???

I would really like to see a 2871 and RS2 dyno plotted on the same graph. At this point software is what's holding the 2871 back. With out an off the shelf software solution the RS2 or 3071 are easier/less costly options. The problem for me is the RS2 and 3071 have roughly the same spool RPM which is too high for my driving style.

Hopefully by the time I'm ready to upgrade 034 will have software available or I'll have to pay to have a custom tune. VAST is local so if it comes to that I'll be talking with Mike to see what he can do for me.
