so i'm taking over this Ur that's been in the family for years. I just called the service dept. to see when the (first) timing belt was changed.... 102,320 miles. wow, lucky they made it that far... on the plus side the car has 147,000 on it now. so i've got a little time to get the next one done. 60k interval right?

<crank>...does that shop/guy have the tool, or did he come up with an ingenious concept.

I'm gonna try & do the timing belt job this weekend..mostly just wanting to find that fvcking crank lock.

Not saying you should go 120k but a 60k interval is a bit overzealous...YMMV, of course. My guess is you didn't dodge any bullets.

If not, maybe it was done and the previous owner had forgotten and or lost the record. Mine had 83k on it when I purchased it and the timing belt was so cracked I was worried about driving it the 120 miles home.

Part of the reason he was selling it was he didn't feel like shelling out the money for a TB job, so I got the car for a lot cheaper than I would have otherwise. FWIW, I did my 2nd timing belt at 205k(85k later) and the belt/pump were fine - the pump rubber seal had begun leaking coolant, though.

I just had a Honda Accord last week that was brought in for a t-belt @ 90k and the belt probably only had 10k on it, last month, same thing with a Four Runner. It sucks for us because many times it takes a bit to get down to the belt only to see its new and then we have to put it back together and send all the parts back. Not really a biggy, better than putting a t-belt on there car that they don't need. I think often the water pump starts leaking and the belt gets replaced or the customer takes the car in for scheduled maintenance and the belt gets done and they forget.

The belt had little surface cracks but looked mostly fine. I plan on replacing the belt again about 90k miles from now.
