View Full Version : A4 engine idle with clutch engaged...

This is an observation I made in a section of the route I take to work that has inchworm traffic up a hill. With the gear in 1st and clutch engaged, I allow only the engine idle to move the car. When the RPMs dip below normal idle (about 600 on my 99.5 2.8) due to the climb up the grade, the engine actually speeds itself up so as not to stall from the load. I've never experienced this in other manual transmission cars, so I thought it was really cool. While it's not surprising with computer management, it makes me wonder if I put unnecessary stress to the engine by not giving it enough gas for it to have to give itself more gas just to keep its idle...?

It also kinda makes me think of HAL. "Dave, why are you trying to stall me?" :-)

My 1.8t does this, I think my 93 VW Cabrio does it as
well. I think it's pollution control related

on the 1.8T the throttle stop has a motor on it, you can feel the pedal move as it adjusts the idle.
