I have had numerous comments on the downpipe that is on my S4. When I worked up in Littleton we had a machine shop guy that worked next door to our shop that did the wastegate pipe for my 1995 Audi S6, and also the exhaust for my current 93' S4...he is simply AMAZING. Look at the pictures of the downpipe and see for yourself!

Anyways, Patico 93' S4 approached me and asked me if I'd be willing to get a downpipe made up for him, I figured I would offer it to the rest of the list and see if anyone else was interested in possibly getting a downpipe made up for their car. (read on)

Basically, everyone knows by this point that when you put a GT series turbo on our cars the Stromung downpipe will bump into the tie rod (when at full wheel lock). Also, the Stromung downpipe has a 2.5" section that eventually transitions into a 3" section. It has been my experience (from back to back testing) that this attribute of the Stromung downpipe considerably reduces the exhaust gas flow off of the turbo and robs the car of horsepower. Switching over to this TRUE 3" turbo back downpipe has CONSIDERABLY opened up my car for sure.

As you can see, the craftsmanship is amazing and the way in which we are going to do this, we will be able to offer these downpipes for less than other 3" downpipes currently on the market. Between Patico 93' S4 and myself, we have access to cars that have a variety of GT series turbos on them as well as RS2 turbos (with RS2 exhaust manifolds). The downpipes will be made to bolt DIRECTLY up to a Stromung mid-section (Gen. 3 and Gen.4...I think the mid-sections are different on the earlier Stromungs) and will obviously leave plenty of clearance for the tie rod on the passenger side. I will personally test fit each downpipe to insure fitment on the respective car it goes to (turbo set-up wise).

If anyone is interested in possibly having a downpipe made up for their car, just let me know. It makes no difference to me one way or another, I just thought it would be a kind gesture to offer a simple solution to a problem that is clearly evident with attaching large turbos to our cars. I remember the first time I installed a full 3in DP on my Volvo 850R : )

Going from a drinking straw to a sewer pipe is always fun, so I'm interested too.

What time frame are you thinking of ?

Thanks,

mike

a short 2.5" section at the flange does serve a few benefits, related to exhaust gas velocity (its all in Corky Bell's book: maximum boost). All that said, I'd say the performance will probably be similar between a full 3" at the turbo flange vs 2.5" to 3" transition by the WG tube.

Cool that you are building downpipes Brian, looks like fun :)

Brian YGM:

Price would influence my decision.
Please add me to the list.

PS: Marc points out Corky Bells book. There's a technical reason why the Stromung is shaped that way.. So says Corky Bell.

Wider is technically correct in a few particular areas.
