If it's a 98.5 or less then they are on all the time and probably cooked themselves to death by now! Audi made a mirror change I believe in '99 and they mirrors last a little longer but will probably still cook themselves in time! They are on all the time from '97 on.....stupid design as the '96 and prior years came on with the rear defroster as it should be. I rewired my '97 to come on with the rear defroster and the mirrors are like new. I went through 2 sets in 2 years prior to the wiring change.

I have a 97 and had my mirrors changed for the third time. This time, they installed mirrors that come on when the temp. outside reaches a certain degree- check out the Audi technical bulletin (updated one) on heated mirrors....

I was wrong, they still die!!!!
