Eight people turned out. Yang K., Dave L., Gabriel (lskolnick), Barry G. (with his for sale TT), Sean D. (quattro20v), me and two "new" guys: Keegan B. (Gabe's friend with his newly resurrected/salvaged silver S4 from California - Keegan also has a CQ with an AAN transplant ) and Marcus S. (has the mythical silver S6 with cloth seats). We had the back room of the White Spot to ourselves so there was plenty of room for others to have come.
Discussion topics included:
1. Dave Loff's big black brake conversion with a good wife story included.
2. Marcus's Air Care (high NOx) problems and solutions (he has real MTM Stage 1+ chips complete with the encryption boards that make using the original chips to get through air care impossible).
3. Keegan's "new" S4 - cudo's for resurrecting a "parts" car.
4. Keegan's coupe mit AAN and future 2.6L conversion.
5. Barry thinking about swapping an AAN into a Vanagon (don't laugh it has been done).
6. Outside - Keegan's cone-style intake
7. Outside - Gabriel's winter car - red 7A CQ
8. Outside - Sean's new front fender side markers.
9. Other assorted stuff I can't remember (who is the secretary of this "club" anyway?)
I gave Marcus a ride in my car. It wasn't a good night to be driving (very wet) but I did put the RS2'd power down a couple of times for him. Probably better if he rode with Sean or Dave L. (they make more hp than I do).

I don't have an NOX problem, i have a high HC problem.
Valley Eurotec says no leaks, O2 is good (brand new), plugs "look" newish, but they say cats are not lighting up (strange for a car with 136KMS).

... as a result of the lean conditions. These Cats don't help this situation. They only help high HC.
Marcus has new cats (aftermarket but reputable brand).

how is IA and/or MRC software in this regard?

runs lean. Some people don't have a problem (maybe in higher altitudes where the air is thinner) but some do. People around here (Vancouver (sea level)) have problems with pinging (higher density air = higher (leaner) A/F ratio).
MRC IME runs rich (in general). Less power but safer. No direct experience with IA (Note: IA Stage 3 ~~ MTM Stage 1 (2.5 bar MAP)); IA Stage 3+ ~~ MTM Stage 1+ (3.0 bar MAP)).

aggressive timing advance. Still lots of fun though!

but have been having issues with timing and been assuming it was coil related

So it's possible that the cats do indeed need to be replaced and that should lower my high HC.
98% sure its not coil related, it happens at random, notice most if stomp on gas below 3000 rpm in any gear (even 5th gear trying to pass at 60mph). once it hits 4800 or so it smooths out. has not happened in a while, swapped out coil packs, it happened once, swapped back, have not felt it again yet.
ease into throttle till 3000 rpm and it seems fine.
MTM 1+, Vmap, Stromung and stock spring was backed out all tha way

I always thought it was a knock sensor pulling the timing, then letting it go again.

I saw Keegan's Jetta. I had a very early 1980 Jetta 4 dr just like his (mine had the Rabbit interior fabric). Same colour (Artic green metallic). It was my first VW/Audi. Built the 76 hp 1.6L up to about 100 hp (big valve head (port matched to intake and exhaust), G-grind cam, tubular header, Leistriz aftermarket exhaust, Weber Big-throat throttle body.
Little did I know I would still be playing with VAG cars 24 years later (continuously).
