Timing belt was not due but a leaky front crank seal prompted the job early. Any recommendations on a method for removing this small diameter seal? Also found the crank pulley key to be cracked.. Lots of locktite on the crank bolt.. is locktite necessary here? Timing belt was in good shape but rather loose. Anderson motorsport did the last timing belt job at 128.5k, now 169k miles.

no loctite needed and I suggest getting a new crank bolt and lock.. or pully?

You really don't want that to slip...

...I am planning on doing my t-belt soon, and was hesitant to do the front crank seal because it sounds like it could be a major headache. See the writeup at the link below.<ul><li><a href="http://www.s-cars.org/postnuke/modules.php?op=modload&amp;name=News&amp;file=article&amp;sid= 148&amp;mode=thread&amp;order=0&amp;thold=0">http://www.s-cars.org/postnuke/modules.php?op=modload&amp;name=News&amp;file=article&amp;sid= 14

The description in Bentley &amp; S-Cars is good

You can <a href="http://www.blauparts.com/audi_vw_timing_belt_kits/Audi_Timing_Belt_Kit_VW_Timing_Belt_Kit.htm">rent</a> the tools from Blau if you buy the T-belt kit from them.

Or just get it <a href="http://cgi.ebay.com/VW-AUDI-SPECIAL-TOOL-CAM-SEAL-FITTING-T10015_W0QQitemZ4624486280QQcategoryZ10372QQssPage NameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem">cheap</a> online

was. The belt I took out of my other S was tighter but had many more miles on it, even might have been the orginal with 144k miles on it. it was very cracked and the teeth pulled right off with a pliers.
