the window lockout switch disables the cigarette light. Neat, and makes sense when dealing with small children in the back.

I retrofitted a rear lighter socket to my 95.5, which should mean that most cars will have the wiring already in place. You need only need 2 pieces from a car that has this feature- the switch panel in the back of the console with the lighter socket, and a trim panel that includes the cutouts for the switches and the lighter socket. You could probably modify the stock trim panel to work also. If you pull the console, the wiring should be pretty easy to find, but I can post pics of my 95.5 (which currently has the console out) if it would help.

Plus they weren't necessarily consistent on what changed when. I have a 93 S4, and 95 and 95.5 S6's, so I can check a lot of stuff just by walking out to the driveway ;-)

It's a good idea to disable the cig lighter when the windows are locked for kids, but it would be a real wild goose chase trying to find the problem w/o knowing the window lock switch did that. At least you found it in the wiring diagram. Most people would have now clue how to read an electrical diag.

Thanks, I've been going nuts with my 1997 A8 to figure why the lighter in the back seat stops working periodically and I can't find the problem. I like to plug in my cell phone there so I don't have wires into the ash tray. I never would have guessed the window safety switch would control the cigarette lighter. Those smart Germans!
