Dave F - Fuel pump is in and my back is in some serious pain ;-)..
Thanks for the pump write up, everything went as you wrote, except there was still a ton a pressure at the banjo fitting on top, which ended up Valdezing all over the place. Weird I thought??
Somebody had been in there before, as one of the plastic clips was bent all the way over and ended up taking a swim. That was <fun> fishing it out of there! One clip seemed to hold the pump just fine although.
NOW, for the good news. Car starts perfect and it boosts a bit higher and consistently now on every WOT pull. For the GREAT news; my intermittent ping (put 100 miles on the car yesterday and got nothing!!) seems to be gone as well.
T'aint no substitute for knowledgeable experience! Thanks for your direction / help. Apparently it would have been much easier / cheaper to ask you in the first place about seven months ago.
Thanks again.

You're welcome. I thought I had mentioned the pressure thing. The trick is to start the car and ..
then pull fuse No. 17 (drivers side end of dash), the fuel pump fuse. This causes the engine to run and use up the remaining fuel (and pressure) in the fuel line.
I didn't know that when I did the change but I thought I had mentioned it. I will go back and edit the instructions.
The reason that I changed my perfectly "good" (18 month old) VDO fuel pump was I wanted to see whether a new Bosch fuel pump would get rid of some WOT pinging I was getting with my RS2 setup. It helped but it wasn't perfect.

Not much...
Stromung 3" turbo back and a forged BPV, running 21 lbs of "pingless" ;-) boost from a mystery chip / software.
Fresh top end, but did not do rod bearings. Hindsite is 20/20 on that one!!
The car only has 74K on it, and I had grand plans out of the gate, but as time has passed, I think I may just do a variation on the RS2 theme and be happy.
After talking with you for an afternoon may change that plan although.. ;-)

You did, your instructions were just fine too...
I pulled the fuse, let the thing die (it took a solid minute of cranking to get it started to a lumpy non-drivable "barely" idling state, and then released the pressure off of the gas cap. It was like a huge air pocket got stuck in there somehow.
Leave it to Schroeder's car to be "the one" that didn't follow the herd!
On the plus side, I'm sure my rear diff is very clean now!
