Puttering?
Im not sure what to call the noise... but when I turn my car off I it doesn't just kill... it "putters" out. Im talking 3/4 of a second but it makes my dash rattle slightly. I also noticed some knocking that sounds like its coming from right behind the bumper (still bumper cover free) on the drivers side. My car also squeels wfor a quick second right after it cranks. I ddon't know if its my starter or what. II've considered taking my car over to Champagne and asking them to check it all out but Im not sure I want to face what could be wrong... I also don't know how to ask them to be conservative though I do trust 'em. Anyone in colorado care to help me troubleshoot myy problems?

It's called dieseling.
It used to happen all of the time in carbureted engines, when the engine had carbon deposits in the cylinder - or just cheap gas. The carbon would get hot enough to ignite gas, or the fuel would just detonate from compression (therefore - diesel) - as there was a carb - the engine still got fuel.
The question is - with the car off - how is the engine getting fuel????

I've never put anything less than 91 octane in my car - typically from shell or conoco but sometimes
I have to use diamond shamrock. Rebuilt injectors? How much does it cost to just replace them? Are upgrades possible or suggested? I'll try an injector cleaner... but im still curious about the knocking and the weird shriek that happens right after the motor cranks.

its different from the cycling puttering sound you hear in movies when old trucks are turned off.
Its a very fast rumble that lasts less than a single second. I'd say at the most a half of a second.
