On a difficulty scale of 1-10, how bad is replacing the heater core?

Default For a heater core job not really that bad, I rate it a 6 or 7.
Some heater cores, take Volvo's for instance are a major bitch.

most of the work is done under the hood, with some inside the car.

Default 2nd - that's how I did it (edit)
Use the Engine Bridge to lift it up, just like Bentley describes - worked like a charm ;-)

Just be careful to disconnect the flap motor cables from inside the car (reach up under the accelerator in towards the center console) before completely pulling it out.
