Why is the 1993 audi s4 quattro so heavy?
I was looking at edmunds, and it seems the 1993 audi s4 quattro has a curb weight of 3781. When you compare that to a 1995 audi 90 with a curb weight of 3290 (plus or minus 10 lbs) I wonder why the s4 is so much heavier.
If I get a good enough answer, I might consider driving 120 miles to buy an s4 and sell my audi 90 quattro.

all kinds of options..
As above, the C4 chassis S4 and S6 are fully loaded.
long wheelbase C4 chassis, large enough interior for 6 foot people front and rear.
to name a few..
leather seats front and rear,
tilt and telescopic steering
4 WD ABS Disc brakes
Torsen
Independent suspension
as they say in the car biz, "All the buttons"
and all this stuff adds to the curb weight.

The B4 chassis is a little more advanced.
The C4 is based on a design from 1983 that has been reinforced (made heavier) to keep up with crash standards.
The B4 was the first Audi to be designed by computer to cram more crap into less space--take the gas tank for example.

Size and standard content is the short answer. The longer answer is...
that size alone is a huge part of the difference. The S4 is 12.3" longer, 4.3" wider, and 1.8" taller. Think about a 12.3" long section cut across the car and how much that would weigh. Now add the weight a 4.3" wide section cut lenghtwise and another section 1.8" high and you begin to see how that adds up quick.
The S4 also has no options except CD changer. Everything that Audi offered was standard equipment and many of those were not even offered on the 90. Optional equipment is not included in the curb weight. Also, think about how much the turbo, IC and all the ducting weighs.
A larger more powerful car requires all the other parts to be heavier and stronger. Bigger brakes, beefier suspension and structure. The added power requires a much stronger drivetrain.

Simply put, the '93 S is the early A6 chassis. The B5 S4 is obviously an A4 chassis.
Comparative weights of an early S4 Avant(Europe only), and an 01 S6 Avant would be a more appropriate comparison, and I think you would find the earlier car to be lighter.

Hmmm... not really understanding your question.
It's sort of like asking "Why does a car that's larger and more luxurious than another car weigh more than it?"
Skip the 1993 S4. Shoot for the marvelous 1994 model. They weigh in at around 600 lbs lighter than an Exige.

The S4/6 is more of a midsize but due to superior packaging has interior approaching full size
The B4 90q is an entry level compact luxury/sport sedan...not a mere commuter car. It only gets 2 or 3 more MPG's than a urS car anyway.
