This one is 6 months old.
In case it's not obvious from the picture, that is a high pressure jet of coolant spraying out from a pinhole leak in the bottom of the tank. Fortunately it closes up when the pressure in the system is relieved.

good thing i didn't throw my OEM tank out
i replaced it with an aftermarket one, because i thought that's what was leaking (it wasn't). i've already put the OEM cap back on...and if this POS busts, i'll have a spre.

Yeah, maybe. I'm not sure if that leak was this one or not.
I went a couple of months without losing any coolant after I tightened up that clamp.
Hopefully Clair has a tank in stock. I have to go by there on Saturday to pick another X-plug anyway.
Maybe I should change my handle here to "leaky"...

Hunh - I did the 88 80Q tank 5 yrs ago with an aftermarket...
and it is still good (It stops by to visit.)
And the one in the S is from the same source. Has the OEM P/N on it.

actually, the same happened to me!
I had an aftermarket tank that had been in use for about a year and a half that developed a leak from the SAME (repeat SAME) spot. Thanks for the photo - it brought back memories!
I won't say where I got it from, but it had "PPH" printed on the top. These were in addition to the part # - 4A0 121 403. Granted, it failed on a day when the car got VERY hot (stop and go traffic in Atlanta on a late July afternoon). Maybe a failure point for these tanks? From a production run with a vulnerability? Tank cap appeared to be working fine, but was replace anyway after this leak.
The tank before this one was the factory original - it had been in use for nearly 12 years, and it failed at the top connection where the metal sleeve is (a known point of failure for the original tank, if memory serves).
The tank that's been on the car since the PPH tank cracked is made by Meyle (name visible on top)

Interesting... it seems like an unlikely failure point, but evidently not just a freak occurence
The first tank I replaced was presumably about 10 years old, with the leak at the metal sleeve as you describe. The second one was an Audi part that I replaced when it was still intact because it had some debris in it from a hose disintegration incident that I couldn't remove. Time for tank #4...
