That's the area for the trip computer display. Only 92 spec NAmerican cars got it. Other places ...
the trip computer was an option, like our 93-only carbon fibre trim, up until the last S-cars were made in June 1997.
It's called de-contenting to make a price point (i.e. more profit and less loss). Audi actually claimed that the trip computers were unreliable. Funny. I have one in my 1986 Jetta and in functions fine and most people with 92 spec cars never seem to say that theirs have failed (other than the display bulb).

Has anybody figured how to retrofit these onto our cars?
Trip computer displays are somewhat plentiful from 5k, 200, and 90's.
I bet wiper stalks with the rocker button could be taken off B5 Audi's.
