tom feels that it's not the clutch, but if it's not then what is it???

has anyone had a similar experience. What are the usual symptoms of a dead clutch?

and there is a stink. Generally there is no noise.

i had posted before about my rear diff locking itself occasionally and on the day my car failed, the rear diff locked itself, but didn't unlock like it usually does.

now i just went out to the car and all the rattling noises are coming from the rear of the car (rear diff). When i engage 1st gear I can feel the car trying to move just slightly and but then it just becomes that rattling noise.

The part I don't understand is that I can leave it in 1st gear and it doesn't stall, I just hear that rattling.

is it possible that the rear diff is so busted that it's allowing the driveshaft to turn freely but obviously not putting power to the ground.

you need to be careful about jumping to conclusions and buying a bunch of parts that you may not need. This is not a typical clutch failure, if it is a failed clutch.

Did you get a lot of clutch slippage?
