Ever since the temp dropped consistently below 65 or so around here, I've turned off the compressor on the climate system. I don't know why I'd need this to be on (assuming the snowflake means it's really on) when I don't need any cooling. Of course, when it gets into the 30's I think that it stays off by itself. Should I just be leaving this on full auto all the time, or am I OK in turning it off in cool weather?
Doug G
98 1.8TQM

Doug,
By all means, turn it off when the temps are in the 60's. If it's that cool out, the only reason I'll have the compressor on is to help defrost the inside of the windshield when it's wet out.
Other than that, keep it off...you'll get better performance out of your 1.8.
Andy Hedin
'97 1.8Tqms, Wett 1.0 Bar, ABT Filter, Tint

There is no problem turning off the compressor when it's not needed, and there are actually several good reasons to do so. But don't forget that the compressor needs to operated for several minutes at LEAST once a month to keep the oil circulated in the system. If you don't, the seal around the compressor shaft will dry out, and you will start to loose refrigerant.

I have found that the inside of the windows fog up very little if you normally run without the compressor on. . If I do have a problem and the temp is above 40 I turn on the compressor. There was a lot of talk and some of it was quite technical.
I guess in a nut shell the problem with keeping the compressor on is moisture remains in the vent ducts, the engine warms it up and it appears on the inside windows just when you don't want it.
Roy M 2.8q Tip
