Has anyone experienced a noticeable, harsh jerk when rapidably accelerating or deaccelerating. It feels like there is a hesitation in the drive train. I have spoken with Audi and they said this is common in the 1.8T but I don't think so. I am hesitant to bring the car in since I have put in Nuespeed chip. By the way, I had this problem prior to the chip. Any advice??

I also had a jerk in acceleration in my 2.8Q. It usually happened when I stopped fully and then accelerated (as in neighborhood driving).
I took it into Audi, but they couldn't find anything. When I posted here about six months ago, I received a few responses that the problem is "transmission slam" and that it is somewhat common to Audis and BMWs.
I don't know if I believe it, but I have learned to live with the problem. It occurs about once a month now.
HTH
AG
98.5QT

I have the same problem! While shifting from first into second it jerks/bucks and it does it every time (cold/hot, morning/night). I didn't notice it as much before I chipped the car but now it buggs the crap out of me. I did take mine into the dealer and they told me that it was a characteristic of the manual quattro drive train. I don't understand how the 2.8 and 1.8 can have the same manual quattro drive train but one has a jerking problem. Last time I picked the car up I didn't have time to argue the point but next time I take it back I will. Let me know what you find out.
Bill P
Bill_Parks@atkearney.com
Blk A4 1.8t QMS & all Wett
That is caused by the rpm not dropping quickly enough for the next gear to seamlessly match rpms. In other words, if you pull the car to 5000 in first then slam into 2nd quickly, the rpms will still be high (~4000) when the clutch is engaged again. That's way to high for second gear at that speed where you left off accelerating in first, so it will jerk you harsh while rpms are subdued to the proper level for second gear (~3300).
I think it is designed to act like it so that boost does not disappear between shifts.
Are we talking about the same thing?
I sometimes get a mild 'thump' in between shifts - particularly when shifter quickly/aggressively if I engage the clutch too quickly. I certainly wouldn't consider this a 'jerk'. My service guy said that the thump is the torsion system engaging (???)
Tom
1.8TQMS Silver/Ecru

I have the afforementioned hesitation in my 97 2.8M. If I didn't have a standard transimission I'd say the tranny was slipping. I give up on Audi service techs. As long as the car rolls forward on a hill, they think everything is normal.
I'll probably take it to an Audi specialist.
