Hey guys,

The Audi gods have punished me.

Under relatively hard acceleration in 3rd gear(not past 5KRPM), the car began
making some awful scraping noises. I thought that my entire exhaust was hanging
on the ground. As I go faster, it gets louder. If I come to a stop, it takes a
while for the scraping noises to stop, as if whatever's scraping, is rotating
to a stop.

When I mean loud, I mean dominates the cabin, even with windows closed. It
sounds really loud outside of the car as well.

I just did the clutch less than a 1000 miles ago, so could I have messed up aligning the driveshafts? The
car engages gears fine, it shifts fine...so I don't know what else it could be.

What does a bad throwout bearing sound like?

I replaced that with the clutch...seemed pretty straightforward...

but I don't know.

On my CQ, which needs a new clutch, the throwout bearing sounds like a subtle grinding sound that winds down whenever you clutch in. At lower RPM's it's not noticable but at higher RPM's it's definitely there.

The TO bearing is that dark grey thrust bearing on top of the clutch assy.

I just don't know what kind of noise it makes when it goes bad.

and the sound is there when I engage/disengage.

Could it be the starter cogs perhaps not totally disengaging?

Throw out bearing should only make noise when the cluch is depressed - moving or not (Unless not completely retracting from the diaphram - but, same thing - moving or not - no diff - just engine speed related.)

Ah yes, the fan. The faster the vehicle moves - the more pressure against the fan. But - keeps on spinning afterwords? Hmm - fan has 'air brakes' - (resistance) should wind down quickly. Fan clutch bearing broken free?

One other thing - while checking for another noise after the great Pentosin flood of 2003, I released some pressure on the serp belt tensioner while running - & got some interesting noises from the idler pully. If the tensioner spring is weak - damaged - sticking this could stay spinning for a bit after stopping / slowing down.

Good luck!
