A couple of early mornings past had some fun with a Volvo. Fellow had pulled up at a light then just took off quickly. Next light when I pulled up, rolled down the window and asked him what he was running. Said well over 300 HP with chip and many mods. I replied that after the officer makes his left infront of us we should be clear. He mentioned that I had quattro and he would be at a disadvantage. It is all part of the package I said.

He started reving it up with a foot on the brake ( I am pretty sure his was an auto) and not wanting to drop the clutch at 4k I just brought it up to about 2K and did not launch very well. I stayed at his door up to about fifty and slowed down as a car pulled out infront of him. The entire time I could hear his wheels chirping.

The next light he was able once again to launch better but could not pull away. Pretty close match and too bad the roads were not a littly damp. He would have had a problem. He ran the next light and got on to the interstate just north of the sky way bridge. I finally caught up and passed him as I turned on to 4 towards Orlando and he remained heading north of Tampa.

I guess the moral of this one is save the clutch and power is not everything unless it can be controlled.

But wait there there is more.

I believe the T5 5 cylinder is based on the old 2.2 Audi engine anyways.

I guess screwing with a new V70R or S60R would not be a smart move then.

in European Car. Had run it with an MTM chipped S6 at the Glen in the summer of '98 and the cars were pretty comperable in acceleration and top speed reached on the start finish section.

Volvo current (and soon to be retired) series of inline engines dates back to 1989 when this family of engines (designed with Porsche from scratch) first appeared in 6-cylinder guise in the 900 series cars. It's a modular design and spawed 5 and 4 cylinder variants as well.

Volvo's new line of inline engines looks even better and more efficient and they also have a high-output V8 coming out late next year for the S80 and XC90 line (I still haven't seen confirmation whether there will be a blown version.)

Thanks.

a large part of it was driving. I don't think those guys were shifting when they should have. It was fun anyway.

Just thought I'd buzz in on this one, and mention my experiences with Volvos.

My brother owns a 96 850R. Its 5-cylinder was co-developed by Porsche, if what I've read is true. The car is pretty fun to drive, and certainly isn't anything like my 88 740 Turbo. His car is essentially stock, aside from a set of Moda R6s w/215/45/17s.
A short anecdote... My friend owns an '01 S4, and on our way home from WaterFest 2002, where he had APR perform on-site ECU reprogramming, we came up alongside a T5-R on route 80 eastbound in NJ. We were in the left lane doing about 75, he was in the middle, clocking about 70 or so. We slowly passed him up, taking note of his a-pillar guages, big front brakes and aftermarket black mesh grill.. his car looked nice and neat, but we figured he'd have no chance of keeping up against the 300hp-370lb/ft S4. Less than 5 seconds after passing him up, he reappears to our right side, passes us up and continues to accelerate hard. My friend jumps on the gas, and we're off... both cars racing down a fairly empty stretch of route 80, approaching 90mph...100mph.. and somehow, both cars are neck and neck.. it was really surprising how well he kept up, considering his was an automatic Volvo. Anyhow, I've come to respect those cars more and more, and I'm glad they've released those new Rs... they seem like quite capable cars, and I'd love to take one for a ride, just to see how it'd stack up against my UrS4.
