View Full Version : Should I just relax and live with the wheel gaps or accept the trade-off...

between good looks and handling X high clearance and confort?
I keep studying the car's height as it is, and suspect that after going for h&r's+bilstens it won't clear the speed bumps and ramps that are so popular (?) around here. Roads are also far from perfect, so I fear for my kidneys as well. I actually like the smooth ride of the stock suspension, but I confess having a heavy foot and a taste for perfecting my line around tight turns on my way home. I just learned a lesson on stock suspension: NEVER back off the gas after you commit to a fast turn!!! =8-O
A question: every suspension upgrade needs new camber plates or is there a "bolt-on" option? Are coil-over shocks worth the extra dough?

THE TRACK is the only place you will see the performance advantage! (Put your $$$ into race driving lessons!)

My H&R's came OFF mainly because the prev. owner DID NOT do the camber plates!A MUST DO!!!! (Cheaper then tires!) (Thank god the stock springs & wheels came with the car!) I will give you a great deal on the H&R's!

(HEY - I also hear you get 5 HP for every performance badge/sticker you put on the car! (10 HP for the LED exhaust tips!))

and 0800-help-me-i'm-spinning number. On the other hand I have to desagree about the benefits being felt just on the track. No doubt the higher limits of the car will be better explored on the track, but as I said before I drive my car as hard as I can, as often as possible. I confess I was not very worried about the suspension in the beginning, but I drove a 325is for seven years, which I ordered with LSD and "sport suspension", which I was not really aware of what it was. I felt every wrinkle of the road on my kidneys, and I'm not kidding here, but also drove it like a mad man and it felt like it was on rails no matter what I put it through. I got the S6 about three weeks ago and already go it sideways @ about 80mph, and I had to wash my underwear myself! I would not think twice about going for a suspension upgrade if not by the fact that it will lower the car (remember I mentioned speed bumps and ramps?). If I decide to go for it I'll make sure I get the camber plates!!!

...You will also feel the DIS advantages on the street. (SEE - speed bumps - ruts in dirt roads whilst camping - more then 3.8628743" of snow in the snow belt, the refuse from the mobile crack lab, the last road kill arma-dildo--well, you get the idea.)

The street is an evil place. When faced with the decision - DO I DO IT!!! - or - what s&*@ is out there to trash my exhaust??? I WANNA DO IT!!!! (HARRUMPH!)

Better handling is better served by better sway bars, better tires, better dampers, and by far, better education.

Yup! Lowering the car does indeed help on high-speed perfect condition cornering - when all wheel geometry, uncontrolled conditions are perfect. No argument.

Most people lower their S cars for the looks - & say it is for the handling.

Right.

Replace the A6/100 badges for S4/S6 badges, make it look cool, same effect.

'Scuse me while I barf... (Cleaned up for generally politically correct reasons....)

Just kidding. Really.

Every extreme vehicle has it's own extreme attributes. Quattro's, S-cars have a whole new set.

Extremly. (Ain't it cool?)

Now, if there was just a way to fix the servotronic PS (POS?) (That be power steering) so it provides feedback....

My old 80 Quattro had great feedback - Wheel feels heavy in corners? Tires are hooked up! (Joy!) Feels light? You have some big problems! (Oh Sh^^^ Oh Dear!)
(PS - the servotronic relay is sitting in the passenger door bin. Flopping about. A proper place for it!)

Your post is ignorant and annoying.

"The street is an evil place. When faced with the decision - DO I DO IT!!! - or - what s&*@ is out there to trash my exhaust??? I WANNA DO IT!!!! (HARRUMPH!)"

Wah wah wah... It's not our fault if you can't keep your car's belly off the pavement. Some of us know how to take care of our cars. It's not "rice" to put an 1100 dollar, quality built suspension on a 10 year old car, that at this point should only be considered a "fun car". If you want to put a ground effects kit on, cut your springs in half, and rattle around bumping into things, then I agree with you, that is stupid.

But come on, have some sense. Suspension is one of the better handling mods you can do to the car. And you don't have to be a race car driver to appreciate it. The car feels 100 times better for street driving. It's more responsive, it's more stable, and it's more fun.

I don't drive the S4 daily, I drive it for fun. Since it's purchase in 1993 it's seen half of one winter, and I'm just not seeing your point.

If you want to call me "Rice" for driving a slightly modified German car, then go ahead. But that makes no sense. If people need the ride height, don't do it. If you don't need the clearance, give me one good reason not to.

I guess you can't win, if you don't do it you get called Rancho, and if you do decide to do it, you get called Rice by some guy with a total of 10 posts.

Do whatever fits you best Tripleblack, if you can spare the clearance, don't take this fools word for it. It's a great modification when it's right for your situation.

I noticed it right off the bat.

The nice thing about a suspension setup that's firmer and newer is that you definitely notice a difference. The car goes from a Cadillac ride to a sports car ride; transforming the car. Cornering is more fun and more sure-footed. My smile factor went up quite a bit.

That combined with the look results in a good bang for buck mod.

The downside is that I have to "plan" for every speed bump. But... I don't really mind. Snow would be an issue if I didn't live in Phoenix :-D.

it is widely accepted that it adds 20hp, but some argue that the number is actually close to 50hp! Seriously, I enjoyed those three days immensely, it was the best car related thing I ever did, next to buying the S6. The sticker and badget are still resting on a drawer, though. That's why I'm considering the chip upgrade!

if you have to worry about winters and dirt roads, don't do it

if you can spare the clearance and like better handling cars, jump on it

my scene is:
no snow
no dirt roads
some bad (uneven, broken and patched) tarmac

I guess I should go for it!

With extreme prejudice. (Hey - can we make it squirm for a while??? Please?)

My point - if it is done ONLY FOR LOOKS - and the job is left half done, That's a Rice Boy CAR! (See the link - it's pretty good!)

If you do it right - and have the knowledge to drive it to take advantage of it - Coolness!

Most S Car owners know what we have.
