the shareware VWTOOL. VWTOOL doesn't have any of the restrictions built into the free version of VAGCOM. Both have worked fine on all my projects from 1990 to 1999 so far.

the real question will be what kind of cable/interface to get. I've had success with both the OBDTOOL cable and the cheap Autonostics cable.

I'll probably eventually need to upgrade to the real VAGCOM hardware and software when I get into projects with dual k-line and CANBUS applications.

If you value or need a high level of personal customer service then you might consider going with a real VAGCOM from the get go. Ross Tech seems pretty responsive to their paying customers.

...it's worth it. You get the support, it works, it's updated to work with newer cars & you're not limited by old/shareware software.

I've had the hex-com since '02 and it still works with the current release of vag-com. If I do get a newer vehicle I'll do the upgrade program to get the hex-com+can.

If you have 3 Audis, it'll pay itself off real quick - about the cost of having each one of your cars scanned by the dealer -- once!

also a vag cable but the problem is I can't get into the engine control module but tranny abs and HVAC is no problem so maby the cable is faulty or my ecu is not fine, don't know so think twice to get a generic cable rather just buy a genuine one

the 20$ ebay cables work with most cars except the can-bus ones. as for making it work with an older audi: go to a junkyard, get an obd connector, rewire the pins and drill it and wire it to the knee bolster and firewall for the wires. you will be set
