Found out that the cable is not broken for the shifter but even better. Whatever it hooks to inside the transmission itself is broken. Does anyone know what this piece is called, does the transmission need to be cracked open to get this out, and how much of a pain in the ass is it to fix it. Might just ask soon if anyone wants to buy this fine piece of machinery.

the F125 switch. This is a multi-function switch which true to its name does a lot of stuff. I've heard of these failing on the A8's before. If you are so inclined, I can e-mail you the whole procedure for replacing it. Here's the instructions for removing and installing a new one (the gist of it anyway):
<b>Multi-function Transmission Range (TR) switch -F125-, removing and installing
Removing,</b>
Remove left-side transmission support.
Disconnect selector lever cable from transmission selector lever.
Unscrew clamping screw (arrow -1-) all the way and disconnect transmission selector lever from shaft -1-.
<img src="http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh156/ricoblanco/F125A6.jpg">
Remove multi-function switch mounting screws (arrows -2-) and pull multi-function switch off of shaft.
<b>Installing</b>
Using 8 mm wrench, move transmission selector lever in opposite of driving direction into position "P" (to stop).
Shift transmission selector lever back out of this position two detents to position "N."
Place multi-function switch on transmission selector lever.
<b>Note:</b>
Installation of the multi-function switch on the transmission selector shaft is only possible in one position.
Install mounting screws and only thread in far enough so that multi-function switch can still be moved in slots.
Adjust multi-function switch
The switch will run you ~$300. The link below is a source to buy it, although you may want to shop around. The switch is the second item listed (Genuine Volkswagen / Audi - Neutral Safety Switch ES#5557).<ul><li><a href="http://www.ecstuning.com/stage/edpd/pagebuild_v2.cgi?searchstring=multi+function+switc h&searchqt=byvehicle&make=Audi&model=C4+A6&submode l=FWD&engine=2.8">Multi Function Switch</a></li></ul>

Meant to ask, this will fit the 100s 4 speed automatic transmission right?

I realize I posted a link for an A6, but it also shows up with the same part for the 100 as well. If in doubt, you can always ask the retailer. :-)
