Hi,
I've read all the bike rack posting in the Archives and haven't found anything on this topic. My colleague at work has mounted a L-shaped bike rack on to a hitch (small knob) which she has attached underneath her bumper. She has a Miata. The bike rack doesn't contact the car.
Has anyone heard of doing this with the A4?
Thanks,
Kathy
ps. I don't like roof mounted racks because its hard for a person who isn't that tall and doesn't have alot of arm strength (i.e. myself) to lift the bike up.

Kathy:
I had mounted a similar hitch / carrier on my old cars. It appears that the A4's spare tire sits too low and essentially impedes any hitch placement. If other members have attached a hitch (can't be ball and socket type), perhaps they can shed some light. I'm under the impression that even if you could mount a hitch, it would hang so low as scrape driveways and speed bumps.
Let me know if you find otherwise.
-Todd

I spied an A4 in the parking lot with a nice, simple ball/socket type of hitch (not my A4). I took a good look at it 'cause I'm somewhat interested - the bracket was small and bolted to the spare tire pan. The company that did the hitch is below - I know them well because they did what was a very complicated hitch for my 90CQ - and did a great job.
If you want to give them a call .... they mfr hitches - which they will ship - as well as do installations:
Da'lan Inc
68 Walker Road
Shirley, MA 01464
Tel: (978) 425 9585
Both Performance Bicycle and Bike Nashbar, the mail order firms carry racks that fit on trailer hitches. I suspect that the problem with mounting the hitch so as not to have it bottom out occsaioally is common. The BDI trunk mount rack works well on the A4 although someone posted that they received a defective one which they promptly sent back. Nevertheless, I'm happy with mine.
