the fans will come on whenever the AC compressor is engaged. Defrost mode uses the AC system to remove moisture so if the CC is set to Defrost, the AC compressor will come on and so will the fans.

turn off the snowflake and see if the fans shut off......they should.

Easy to remove with a Crescent wrench. Will dump all your coolant. Time to flush the system and replace. Less than $15 <a href="https://www.autohausaz.com/search/product.aspx?sid=gambj0njkdknzu30qwxbvz3f&makeid=800002@Audi&modelid=1008863@A6%20QUATTRO%20%20&year=1997&cid=16@Cooling%20System&gid=4768@Radiator/Auxiliary%20Fan%20Switch">here</a>.

First.....confirm you have a bad fan switch!

IF, the fans stop working when their wiring harness is disconnected from the switch, it's a pretty safe bet the switch has failed in the "stuck on" mode.

IF, you have a bad switch, then simply loosen it completely, but don't remove it. Have the new switch, with fiber gasket read......let go of the old switch (it will fall out of the way) and immediately put the new switch in position and start threading it in. If you've left the coolant tank cap screwed tight, you'll lose very little coolant during this process.

Simply top up the coolant tank when you're done, and be on your way.

I know this thread is a bit old but I think I have a similar problem.

I've been trying the narrow down the sources of the problem and I suspect it might indeed be the fan switch causing the problem.

On my 1993 90s the low speed fan automatically turns on when I turn the ignition on (from a cold engine) and when I turn the engine on, the fan comes on high speed. It never turns off only if I pulled the key out.

It's definitely not a cooling problem. So I checked the run-on relay in the aux. relay box (under dr. side dash) and it's not stuck. So, I guess, my question is, is it really my fan switch that could be causing this?

I am about to order a new one, but I would really appreciate any help to confirm. Thanks in advance!
