View Full Version : Sunroof problems... continued.

Okay. Everything in the roof has been fixed that was broken (I'll explain everything in detail in a later thread), however, now, my motor is acting up. If I plug everything in properly, hold the motor in my hand, it'll work, and move to all 3 positions. However, later, when placed back into its proper position in the car, the motor won't move when the switch is deployed.

This leads me to believe that the problem is the sunroof switch.

So, I searched the forums here on how to clean the switch, took it apart, and cleaned the contacts with some rubbing alcohol.

Still, nothing. It does the same thing.

Also, I recently purchased a motor off of ebay, and the newer one will only make noise. The gears only moved once, and that was when I initially plugged it in.

Does anyone have any idea as to what could be occuring here? Is it possible I need a new sunroof switch?

Thanks.

IIRC, the DIY mentions bending the contacts to make them contact better.

the motor is hanging loose? If so, the track might be toast (or maybe simply binding.)

I think there's an adjustment procedure to make sure the arms are aligned properly i.e. directly across from each other....if it's anything like the VW sunroofs I've worked with.

If that's the case, then you obviously have a working switch, but you have a sunroof that is jammed in place and the motor physically can't move it.

There is a hand crank and I'd suggest you install the motor, then put the hand crank into the motor and attempt to open the sunroof in the vent position.

If you feel a huge amount of resistance....stop, before you break something. Take the roof back apart and figure out what's out of wack.

if I recall correctly the dial has some sort of setup that relays the position of the roof to the motor assembly and if its off it may not work or act funky

It just so happens that it barely works when the motor is installed.

None of the mechanical components of the roof are bad, as I just installed a completely new assembly (two new cassettes and tracking, as my old ones were broken in three pieces), which includes a fully functional rain tray. All of these parts are in mint condition and thus fully functional.

When I was troubleshooting, I'd have the motor in my hand, and turn the switch to see if it moved. Some of the times the gears for the motor moved, other times they do not.

Today, I played with it again and did get my original motor installed again, and it did move the roof, however, it did not move the roof completely, and, when turned to the original "zero" position, tilted the roof DOWNWARDS and towards the REAR of the car, which to give you a mental picture, is the exact inversion of the roof when it is turned to the flip up position.

I am almost convinced that the switch is to blame, unless someone has any other ideas as to why it is acting this way.

Don't take this personal!

When you set the sunroof's mechanicals up, you have to park the roof, and it's mechanicals in their zero position. Once they are perfectly at zero, you operate the motor detached from the roof, to get it into it's zero position.

Once the motor is at zero, you install it.

When I replaced all of the parts, I set the roof to it's zero position (obviously with the motor detached).

My problem is, though, regardless of where the motor is (in my hand, or in the roof), it doesn't operate properly - the switch does not make it move all of the time.

For instance, having the motor in my hand, I can turn the switch, and nothing will happen. If I then disconnect all the wires, turn the car on, and off, then try it again, sometimes the switch will trigger the motor, and it will move, and other times, again, nothing will happen.
