Yes, I don't have a vag com. No, I don't have the Bentley. No, I haven't flashed the codes on the CEL (too scared to fry it). Why would my CEL come on when I think the engine wants to run lean (cruising at 60mph) and not when I've been agressive getting to speed? Is it more likely that the engine can't lean itself or is it that the O2s cant read lean?

and then getting a bad reading from the O2 sensor. I'm not too sure about the Motronic controller functions though.

The fuel injection goes into "closed loop" after the engine coolant temp sensor signals the ECU that the coolant has reached operating tempurature. At this point, the ECU no longer needs to supply cold running enrichment, and the fuel management is taken over by the inputs from O2 sensors, and the MAF.
But I digress.
1)"The Beast" you won't fry anything by flashing your codes.
2) You don't need to spend a bunch of money to read them. Autozone will loan you their generic scan tool for free, as will many other auto parts stores.
3) Get online (ebay) and buy the OBD connector for your car and then download the VW/Audi TOOL program and read your own codes for cheap.
4) You are getting a code at light cruise speeds because that's when the ECU runs a check of the EGR system function. From something like 48mph-65mph and under light steady throttle, it is looking for a temp signal from the EGR port in the intake manifold. If after about a minute, it doesn't see 65*C, it thinks there is no EGR flow (hot exhaust gases)into the intake and turns on the CEL because you have a problem that puts the car's emissions system out of spec.
That's my uneducated guess.....having not read your codes or been told what they are.
Should you discover you do have an EGR "Insuficient Flow" code, there's a write-up in the FAQ's on how to diagnose and cure the fault.

Tried to get the EGR valve off but was stumped by time and baked and rusted nuts to the valve and exhaust manifold. (couldn't even get a 22mm crow foot in there to turn) I was able to get some 3mm fuel line into the opening on the intake manifold and proceeded to remove as much goop as possible and then emptied a can of carb cleaner into it. After reassembly I got a little dip in the idle when i applied the mini vac to the egr. I'll have to tackle it again when i have more time and the car in the air. I think the valve nuts will need some PB Blaster soaking and I might have better leverage from below.
