View Full Version : Trying to sell an old C4 is such sad business.

Tonight a young couple came to look at the 92 100 CS I have for sale. They clearly weren't "Audi people". Dude had worked in a VW performance shop as a helper in high school. Chick sold a Mustang because she didn't like the way it handled in snow.

I could see the wonderment in her eyes as she settled in for the test drive and felt the soft leather and got the seat adjusted just right.

The talk about installing aftermarket stereo with CD player about broke my heart, as did the haggling over $$. Turns out they didn't have the cash anyway and would have to spread it out over a few paychecks. What can you do besides welcome them to come back when/if they get the cash together?

I'm tempted to sell my 97 while it's still marketable and drive the 92 into the ground. Or maybe I should just mothball the 97 until the 92 blows up in 5 or 10 or 30 years.

Unless you need the money...just keep it. I'll be in the same situation within the next year or so. My 94 C4 has 175K and will have 200K within the next year and by then I am sure the wife will want something newer with less miles. At least I'm lucky enough to have shown and convinced her that you can buy nice German cars fairly on the cheap with some miles(115K-130K) and put another 100K on them easily.

Most people around here seem to freak out if their car has 100K and they feel like they have to have another "new" car(domestic of course). Well my old 94 still looks as good as anything on the road when it comes to styling. I'm sure my wife's "comfort zone" will end at the 200K mark though. I'll probably try to find a good used C5 and keep the C4 for myself. I'd really like to see 300K on it. If I go that route I'll have to sell the 96 Saab 900 2.3, but that's okay.

Good luck with it.

I still think it's a good idea to sell the 100 while it still has some value. Hang in there, you'll find the right person.....someone who appreciates a real car, one that doesn't need anything, and that will out last their desire to keep it.

I have to wonder if it's related to people getting their tax refund checks. We got ours a couple days ago....I suspect others are too.

This thread makes me sad, I have 177K and climeing but I was going to ask $4K being all the stuff I did plus its such a clean car. I also think the color and black leather would help it alitle but I don't know what other Audi I want.

lining the doors back up to the body is a complete PITA, but I'm personally glad to know there's no bondo in the doors. Call me a purist, but that was the right call.

I don't see being able to get back any $$$ for the work I have done on the car. It's paid for so it gets parked until winter comes back. I like my Audi too much anyway.

Most of that time was spent watching VW diesel prices. Turns out MB diesel prices are fairly similar to VW for vehicles with similar milage. A 00 Jetta with 150K miles is about the same price a 95 MB with 150K miles. I don't suspect gas prices to drop any time soon and the extra premium on diesel vehicles is only going to go up.

The C4 will just have to wait until winter to be driven again.

Drove a '98 Jetta TDI about 3 weeks ago and really loved it alot. Tons of power, quiet and I just loved feeling the thing spool up. And, the gal said she gets 52mpg! Sweet!

Diesel is $3.19/gal as opposed to $3.81/gal for gas, so converting our Avant would take us from $200/mo down to about $80/mo.

could hardly give a diesel rabbit away. I have seen a few with <100K go for $3500-$4000....insane.

The were such great cars and it's a real drag that they've all vanished. Now when I see one it's like......"Oh my gosh, there goes a Rabbit!" Even when I'm driving my own.

Parts are still dirt cheap, they're so easy to work on and they still get as good or better mileage then any new car other than maybe their TDI cousins.

I just laugh at Prius owners. A few million dollars worth of research and technology and they still have a tail pipe, and the engines only get about 35mpg on the highway.....big woop. VW was getting almost 50 thirty years ago with a diesel tractor engine.
