I was coming off the highway and was losing power. Lost heat also on the way home, it was like 0 degrees. temp gauge works occasionally and was at like 2 o'clock, not good. Coming down the off ramp car shut off, was able to coast to park n ride. Coolant cap had been shot off under the hood and coolant was everywhere. Went back today and tried filling the resevoir, 50/50 pentosin and water. didnt start and coolant was pouring out from under engine. im pretty sure this isnt looking good. just bought a coupe so not that bummed, but would be nice to know whats the deal. thanks for any help..

If it was very cold, then you might even have a leaking/failed freeze plug. Since it leaks when you add any liquid, it should be fairly easy to find the source of the leak.

i tried to follow all the hoses, couldnt really see. where is the freeze plug located? could it pop out and thats where the coolant is running out of? how big of a job is that

So then correct me if im wrong but if a rupsured hose or freeze plug was the fault then that would be where the pressure goes so how could it still blow off that cap.

I would suspect something like a bad waterpump that stoped circulateing the coolent, which led to it overheating and then because of that it blew something apart. Does this sound logical?

If a car overheats quickly and dies, like if a hose bursts, you are generally luck to have damage confined to the head gasket and head.

If the car overheats slowly like with a gradual leak, the bolk gets super hot too and the bearings take a beating.

Sounds like your situation is the latter.

could the cap have melted off? there was partial melting around where the cap screws on, and it wasnt lost it was sitting right there on top of the resevoir. im getting it towed today, so we'll see

Which could be from overheating (for various reasons) or excess pressure from a head gasket rupture forcing way too much pressure into the cooling system.
