A6Gary 06-21-2006, 11:20 PM ~$300 both sides. Total: ~$400. Check around w/ some good indep shops for a better price. You have to R&I axle shafts to replace these boots. zytec 06-22-2006, 06:00 AM ....with petrol, (gasoline), inspect and reassemble with new grease, quite simple with access to a 2 post lift and all the tools. However if you are on a budget with limited tooling and just want to get a boot replaced cheaply that is about to tear or has a small split so no grit water has got in and it hasn't lost all its grease then you can use a cone. All you need to do is get the end of the shaft out of the hub... see pictorial in link below..

http://www.saabcentral.com/~munki/technical/transmission/cv_boot_stretch_type.htm</a

pikesaudi 06-22-2006, 10:44 AM There are ways to do it.I did it 3 times and the 1st one was difficult. There are couple thinks you can do to make it very easy.I don't use hammer to separate the joint from the hub but the same center bolt.(A 23 or 24 mm or some model hex bolt)I take the lower control arm at the hub out with the help of a bar. After I unbolt that 23mm out I rebolt it again and you will see both get separated slowly. But you can check more at www.kris.hansen.com and do some search on Audiworld FQA.It it mudy(grease)but fun to diy tha spend lot of $.Part is about $18+s/h at autohaus.com or other internet sellers.Avoid split boot(it separate later bringing you to square 1)Good luck EDIGREG 06-22-2006, 12:22 PM They only cost $60-$80 each depending on where you get them...If your joint has been without grease for a while (clicking), theres's probably damage done to it already. The_Hamster 06-22-2006, 12:28 PM In my experience those reman axles last a small fraction of the time of a real OEM joint and boot. Reason being is they get destroyed joints (the cores you return), and rebuild them. This means they drill out the socket that the balls go in, and use larger balls. sounds cool, except the part that gets drilled out is hardened from the factory, so the new socket is not nearly as strong as the original. Also the boots are of lesser quality. You get what you pay for, you pay 80 for a whole reman axle, or 80 for one OEM joint/boot. Except the oem joint will last another 10 years (or far longer if you keep tabs on teh boots) whereas the reman will go 2-3 years. lyonelll 06-22-2006, 01:05 PM It's a hassle though. Better to rebuilt if You aren't afraid of durrty work and doing alighnment. islingtonaudi 06-22-2006, 10:24 PM EDIGREG 06-23-2006, 08:02 AM However, if your joint is clicking, there is most likely some damage...and new oem axles are upwards of $250 each. |
