Afte rlooking at my situation tonight, and with my health being the way it is, there is no way I can do the starter myself. What would a shop charge to do the re and re?

My motor was fine, however the solenoid was shot. Sometimes it would start fine, other times the motor would just spin and spin. I lived with it for a good six months and it would go through good times and bad. One night it finally left me stranded for over an hour until I could get it to start, so I gave in and had it replaced. As you have noted from your previous posts, the alternator and some other things must be removed. My mechanic always said how they were "really in a bad place" and as you've seen it's pretty tight in there. Anyway, I'm afraid I am unable to put my hands on the exact receipt right now, but I think the part was upwards of $200-$250+ for a new Bosch starter and it was at least 2-3+ hours of labor. I think the whole thing was around $400 when it was all done (my memory feels like he ran into some other issues with striped bolts or something that hampered it even more). Sorry I couldn't be more help, but I remember it not exactly being cheap, but it wasn't terrible either. Keep us updated and good luck!

OK thank you muchly. I will be getting a new starter From VM Autohaus, the gent there seems like an awesome guy, thanks Mike for pointing me in the right direction.

The thing that really gets to me is my recent inability to work on my own vehicles anymore, it wa ssomething I was once proud of, making 320 hp 4 cylinders etc, but now I can;t even change my own starter due to declining health. Very frustrating situation indeed.

the starter. With the alternator out of the way, I would estimate ~1.5 hrs to R&R the starter. At $80/hr, labor would be ~$270 plus the starter cost.

Great thanks for that information. Maybe I will get it towed to the shop then with the alternator already removed and then have them just re/re the starter.

Local performance mechanic that owns an award winning Porsche has agreed to work on my car. Total time for Re:Re will be 2.5 hours, I supply the parts. Thank goodness!
