i just bought a 1997 audi a6 quatro just like in the heater core update picture. i plan to do this myself.( i have heard the horrible stories and stuff and i am really scared)i just want to save money. also i dont know alot about cars but this sucks really bad cuz i just bought this 2 weeks ago. how come the heater core went out???????
i have ordered the core already but if some one can guide me through this id really apreciate it
also i had a friend of myne look at it he said i dont have to mess with any of the a/c stuff and i dotn have to take apart the dash.
also ive read alot of forums and stuff online
they say that they have like a big puddle of coolant under the passanger side.
how come i dont?
when ever i drive the car for about 1 hour the pressure builds up then i can start smelling coolant. then it leaks. then i wait and just dump more coolant in when the car cools down

its located under the blower motor.
is this all i will have to replace?
do i have to flush the coolant out?
do i need to replace any hoses?
also i tried barsleak it did not work
if some one has any info it will greatly help
please email me at

Well if yours went down the road mine did , it broke at the end cap where the hoses go in! Plastic end caps POS ! Great looking core though ! to bad they did not get the rest right!! I bought a brass core from Advance Auto. Was not a fancy as the OEM but did the job and the price was right. My puddle was in the drivers footwell! Nasty crap to cleanup. Good luck with install! I has a small local shop put mine in. Best $175 I spent!! When I picked it up the guy did not have smile on face and said not looking forward to doing another one!

In order to do the job right you need to pull the center console.

You might be able to pull the heater box assembly out without disconnecting the attached duct work but you won't be able to get all the ducts reattached correctly.

You do not need to pull the dash, just the center console where the radio is, which is connected to the console between the seats.

Take lots of pictures while you take it apart and keep the fasteners in seperate containers that you label.

Just glovebox and knee panel on driver's side. There is room to disconnect and reconnect the ducts and servo wiring.

To original poster: replace the blower while you're in there. The odds are very good that the original blower will start squeaking soon, if it hasn't already.

3 days at an easy pace sounds about right for a novice doing it the first time. The second time it only took me an afternoon, but the first time was much longer.
