Help...
I started to remove my cambelt and the camshaft pulleys have shifted. Like a dope I didn't mark them, I do know that a particular mark was pointing down on both and that there are the markers that the last guy used.

If I'm say, one tooth out on either pulley how much damage will it do? or can i experiment tooth by tooth till it runs ok.

Or is there any other way to get this fixed?????

Although i'm not sure how to figure out the right alignment...i imagine the dealer could do it for you

At this point, DO NOT rotate the engine at all. Get a cam holding tool and use it to align the cams. Hopefull, you should have been at TDC when the belt came off. If not, it will be harder and you have to find TDC and carefully rotate crank and cam by hand very slowly.

You may have to go back and forth on the crank to find a spot where the cams will turn independantly of piston position.

Once you get the cams close, use the cam tool to put cams in finall position.

DO NOT ROTATE THE CRANK WITH THE STARTER

It is possible to turn cams and engine independantly with the belt off. I know I just did it this fall after replacing a head, (cam was out, etc)

I refer to it as the "jiggle" method, cause you turn the crank slowly by hand until you feel obstruction of the valve. Then turn the cam or cams slowly to allow the piston to clear that particular valve. It is a pain, but doable.

That's why never taking the belt off without everything locked in place is a no-no. Unfortunately when you have to take a head off and cam, things get a little stickier.
