So my headlights stop working in my 97 A6q Sedan, right? I'm sure everyone thinks they know how this finishes, but you don't.

Fuses blown? No. Headlights blown? No. Ignition switch? No. Ok, so let's play with the fuse box and try to find out what's goin on here.

Fuse 16 feed to random load? Bingo, headlights. Wait, wait, you say....that's the fog light fuse. I'm with ya. Wierd.

Relay 204 out, jumper 30-87. No headlights, but foglights are operational.

Am I looking at a bad relay? If so, which one is it?

If it's a bad headlight stalk, what wire runs to the headlights so I can install a non-OEM toggle switch to the headlights until I can buy a new stalk assembly?

Sincerely,
Me in the Dark (Sedan)

(Dunno why I did the dear abby thing. sorry guys.)

they are fiddly to take apart but it is quite possible. All you have to do is clean up the contacts possibly just bend them a little to make better contact again.

It is not worth relying on it long-term though, too high in terms of safety risk.

I was really just hoping someone new which wires I would be looking at shorting for the headlights.

I'd like to just splice in my own switch until I can find the stalk assembly for cheap.

This is my daily driver, and I drive at night a lot.

Turns out if I jumper fuses 1 and 2 load side together, then jumper fuse 4 to the heater just like you do the "fog/relay" fix, you can install a switch on that line.

Also, the car looks REALLY cool with all 6 headlights on. Of course, this is just a temporary fix, but after I fiddle with the switch and get it fixed, I plan on figuring out what's wired where so I can continue with a 6-light bright.
