does not function properly. I just recently purchased the car, it's a 1996 A6 Avant. The previous owner told me the motor was shot and he had already picked up a replacement.

When I installed the new motor and tried to use the dial it would raise the back, drop down, and slide a couple inches back and stop. It always stays open about 2 inches and it repeats this process no matter where you put the dial. I had to remove the motor and manual push the window shut because it would not stay close.

Any help would be appreciated.

Never heard of that happening.

Is it a new or used motor?

Disconnect power from motor. Take yr screwdriver/wrench and manually close the roof. You can't push it closed, or else the latch in the back of the roof doesn't lock into place. (and the motor won't think the roof is completely closed) Take motor housing down. Sometimes the old motor gear may have sharred the surrounding black alum housing. Clean off the sharrs w/ toothpick. (this will prevent it from skipping). Then, carefully pry open the circular switch (backside). Clean the rotary switch with a bit of alcohol. Make sure the prongs are properly and evenly sticking out. Sometimes, the prongs bend too much/not enough and isn't making proper contact. Before you reinstall the motor, connect w/ switch and open/close, etc make sure the motor is running. Set it up to 'close'. Reinstall. Should work. good luck.

you might want to clean/lubricate the rails. Also check the operation of the attached rain chanel.

It sounds like panel gets too much resistance and motor stops. This is a safety feature to stop, when somebody's hand (or neck) is pushed by the panel.
