I guess there's no dipstick for the tranny? How does one go about checking ATF fluid levels?

On my V8 quattro there is no dipstick, but you can drain and add 4 quarts, and repeat. This works well as a easy way to refresh and top off the system, curious if the A6 requires something similar.

Reason I am asking is that the transmission seems to shift kind of hard under modest throttle application. If I am hard into the throttle she seems to shift much more smoothly. Anybody run into this before?

Thanks in advance,

Ted

question regarding the ATF fluid. I couldn't seem to find the definitive answer as to what fluid is required. Can I run a regular Dexron III ATF, or do I have to use a dealer only Pentosin mystery fluid? Can ATF be mixed with factory fluid?

Thanks in advance.

then i think you have to use the Audi stuff. From what I had been told, if you have a dipstick you can use regular Dexron III, but if you don't you need the audi stuff. Definatley don't mix different fluids.

You don't need to buy the dealer "Dexron III" ATF. Essentially, all oil companies (who make the OEM ATFs) make ATFs that ZF approves for their transmissions.

be too sure. It's kind of similar to what I have found with the hydraulic fluid for the power steering in the V8 quattro. Pentosin is the recommended fluid, but there are other lubricant manufacturers that make their own version of this hydraulic fluid, many for industrial applications. Many Type 44 owners have switched to the much more reasonably priced versions, with no ill effects.

Many thanks to all who replied.
