my 92 100 was rattling, clanking and clinking for a long time, then the "stuff" inside came loose and clogged up completely. I couldn't get it past 50 on the highway. I limped home but 1/2 mile from home, i had to accelerate. It bogged down then exploded with a whoosh. the clog blew out and it took off like a catapulted jet. (as close to a jet that a 12V can get)
When I opened it up, there was nothing inside the cat. I figured the other side wasn't too far behind, so I hogged it out with a hole saw on a long extension. As it turns out the left side probably was still ok, the honeycombs weren't clogged, but now, they both are totally open. A little more rumble sound, but no adverse affects on anything
