View Full Version : what is the problem with using Fram oil filters 9audia65 03-05-2005, 09:51 PM should i just stick with the black oe type samm 03-05-2005, 11:04 PM Though I have no first hand experience everything I have read says that Audi uses very high flow oil pumps and the Fram is not capable of flowing that much oil. Most on this forum use the O.E. filters. A6Gary 03-05-2005, 11:25 PM happens, unfiltered oil flows around the filter media because Fram (a Allied Signal Company) uses a cheap seal design (e.g., a rectangular spring restraint) on the bottom (i.e., the enclosed end of the filter). When I bought a rebuilt engine for my '72 Chevrolet PU a number of years ago, the rebuilder requried that I use a OEM oil filter for the warranty. They also had a Fram, A/C, and other oil filters cut open so you could see the difference in the internals. One of his techs told me that whenever they pull an engine for a rebuild, he checks the rear main bearing. If Fram filters were used, he said that that bearing would be damaged. Even though I previously used Fram oil filters (very cheap, you know), I only use Mann or Mahle (they make the OEM filters) oil filters on my German cars from that day on. For ~$5 more than a Fram oil filter, I know that my engines are protected as Audi design the oil lubrication system. islingtonaudi 03-05-2005, 11:43 PM SoCal Avanti 03-06-2005, 07:30 AM I've always used black, but I'm thinking of trying the Mobil1 green filter. I asked this forum a few months ago about it, but nobody chimed in. Anyone try one yet? Houpty 03-06-2005, 09:08 AM Scott_Napier 03-11-2005, 11:12 AM |
