struts, strut bearings, stabilizer bar bushings, outer control arm bushings...
low speed, turning wheel up like driveway or over bumps. Front driver's side. NOT ALL the time.
I searched clunks- no luck.
Any ideas?? steering components??

If you'll remember I did the same thing, except the strut bearing. I've been waiting for you to finish to see if it fixed your problems, but I haven't been spending much time on the site, just too busy with summer home projects..
I still have the problem too. If you go ahead and change your control arm please let us know b/c I'll do the same.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help to you, I've been so busy lately...
I have to ask you though, did you get the same let-down feeling after changing all those parts and the clunking was still there. Man I sure did. Except it didn't start clunking for a couple days after I finished.

SAME thing- handles better, I'm glad I did it AND still clunking!! (Took a few days for me too!) Also it doesnt happen all the time. Did you see |skolnick˛'s comment? I guess that is next. BTW your post on the subject was a BIG help- so was Eddw's comment about a ratchet strap to compress the stabilizer bar.
I'm not going to replace the control arm itself- (see posts- someone did and it didn't help) I will try the tie rod ends- when I have the time and the urge!!

mine was clunking and I replaced them and have no more sound like that. There easy to do. This is what I have done to the front end of mine.
New struts
New control arms
New tie rod ends
New strut bearings
New upper shock mounts
It handles great now nice and tight and no clunking. I am doing the rear wheel bearings tommorow and then I should be done for awhile.

on the suspension components. Drove it somewhat hard too messing up 2 of the 18" wheels. Anyway, since putting it back to stock I've been haunted by those annoying sounds which my wife thinks I'm the only one hearing them. Replaced worned out the tie-rods but noise still there. Anyway, found a mechanic who used to work for the Audi dealership to looked at it. He told me it's the control arm where the ball joints seats is worned out. So he told me what parts he needed and orderd it from Blau. Got them installed for $160 bucks with alignment. Guess I paid extra for the peace of mind... ;->

Two possible fixes. One be sure the caps on the strut housings are VERY tight. Two if that does not fix it slide out the strut cartridges out of the strut housing and put one or two teaspoons of silicone sealent down into the housings. Reassemble right away make sure the caps are real tight then let it set for an hour (or what ever it takes for your silicone to set)
